Why NY and not just NYC would be a unique, interesting, and fun FO5 setting

To start, this should be a single player game. If Bethesda/Obsidian/MS can make it so I can play with 1 or 2 friends, I want that but understand it's not that simple.
So why it should be picked:
First, NY has an amazing history when it comes to Pre-Revolution, Revolution, the Civil War, and beyond. Major events like the battle at Saratoga (which is considered the turning point of the Revolution), the 1980 Miracle on Ice, and Woodstock (along with a whole lot more) all took place in upstate NY. So the rich history of the area is ripe for pro American stylizing and propaganda that gives FO it's unique take on American Atom-punk.
That along with more modern history of things like the Native Americans (The Oneidas) actually taking back their land and forming their own sovereign nation (basically they have their own gov. Pay no state taxes, and self govern with police, fire, and allow gambling which NY does not). So their modern government would not only be some great lore, but I honestly believe could be a basis for the main quest line. Things like their unique tribal leadership, philosophy, and gambling (hello 10 luck) could bring a very grey area to fallout that was kind of missed in FO3 + 4. Plus their mythology would make for a great weird scene that fallout has at least 1 of every game.
Also, for those who don't know, upstate NY is very country with major cities pocketed about. (Utica, Albany, Syracuse, etc). So if you liked NV style of wandering the wastes, or 3s style of city wandering, we've got both. Also, we've got two mountains areas, one in the Adirondacks and the Catskills are the other.
That said, one of the most important parts of fallout are the locations. Where can we go? For that I have a list:
Major locations:
Lake Placid Winter Olympics training facility - the winter olympics world be held in 2078 and if they still exist by then and to play into the game, LP could be the location of those games. Again, the miracle on ice where American Amateurs bested the Communist Russian Pros, was held there. The "Better dead than Red" sentiment would be full force. Not to mention one of a few great locations for a possible vault (80, in this case to house winter olympians). Plus, the weapons could be cool too. Hockey sticks, hockey skate blades on gloves, a goalie mask for armor, you name it.
Cooperstown Baseball HOF - Now when you think Americana, Baseball is one of your first thoughts, don't lie. Cooperstown is baseball central and very pretty. Another great place for pro-american styles and fun gear like baseball base mines, softball helmets (because fuck you "A League of Their Own" style pro-baseball league in FO sounds awesome), and of course bats and baseball grenades. Also a baseball Vault (Vault 4, 5, 7, or 9). Not my idea, but in this vault, there's 32 teams of mens and 32 teams of womens baseball (or coed teams, idk), all of whom are pro players. Vault tec test is simple, winner gets food and drinks, loser gets steroid infused food and drink (but they don't know it has steroids obviously). The idea is, test how good at baseball people can be if given monster amounts of steroids for generations. I'll make a separate post about this in detail if desired.
Canastota Boxing HOF - Another unique area for America. Canastota is pretty boring and empty, but for those of you old enough to remember Rocky when it came out, it basically revived Boxing as a major sport and also had a moment where America bested the Red Menace (Rocky IV). Maybe a spot for a vault or to learn unique unarmed moves. Pugilism Illustrated anyone?
Albany - NYs capital and an easy big city area along the Hudson. A great location for corporate greed, governmental corruption, and side quests. Can't say it'll be the focal point of the game since its very near the eastern border of it, but a good location for exploring and lore.
Buffalo/Niagara Falls - Ya ever gone over the falls in a barrel? Do ya want to? I think using Niagara Falls (which has an American and Canadian side, Canadas is the U-shaped famous one) as Fallouts first "Non-American" location would be fun. First, the falls are beautiful and are a major source of hydroelectric power. Second, in FO, America annexed canada, so it's technically still America! Third, right across the "border" are casinos! More gambling! Third and a half, it's another big city and buffalo is where the buffalo wing was invented (God bless buffalo wings). Besides the cool lore opportunity about the annexation and the city location, the falls could be a major location for the story if the main conflict was about powering the area, similar to NV.
Syracuse - NYs (literal) center city. The Salt City as it was formally known is a big city with some great old and new style. Again, not much about the city to say, but a great opportunity for corporate BS. The main attraction would be the Syracuse Dome (formerly the Carrier Dome). Due to its location and style, it's perfect as a central trading hub for the major cities and people. Think of Great Green Jewel style, people living, bars, shops, etc. BUT the really interesting part is what's right next to the Dome. SUNY ESF (Environmental Science and Forestry). This college is special because (A. I went there) it has very unique programs and with some future tech thrown in, could be a great location for a Fallout 3 Harold or NV vault 22-esq quest. The college already does experiments with major chemicals, evolution (FEV anyone?) and breeding plants for unique purposes. Again, I have a really cool idea for this area, but that can be a different post. Fun fact, ESF is actually working to bring back the North America Chestnut that went (nearly) extinct! Also, some asshole releases the fruit flies the genetics lab work with every year and it sucks.
NYC (Empire, 9/11 memorial, Statue of Liberty) - Yeah yeah, you can't have NY without the City, but frankly there's so much here to explore and deal with, I'd leave it to the pros to really do it justice.
Turning Stone Casino - Gambling, a hotel/restaurants like in NV, and a good spot for the main quest line.
Fort Stanwix - A real revolutionary war fort. HQ or major area for raiders. Safe, well protected and with plenty of history.
Fort Drum and Griffis Air Force Base: Two major bases that could be packed with guns, nukes, and power armor. Heavily guarded by turrets, robots, and security gates.
Main Quest:
Without too much detail, I figure your character will be hired to figure out the future of NY.
You'll be brought to the Turning Stone which is currently the HQ of the Oneida tribe. Your job would be to either work with the other tribes in the former Iroquois Confederation (Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, Mohawk, and Tuscarora [added later]). (Quick note: in my AU, some time after the bombs fell, the IC came to power because of their knowledge of living off the land and attempted to rebuild society. After some time rebuilding and establishing a post-war society, the tribes do the thing all humans do and bicker. Around 2200 the IC broke apart but the tribes retained power in their areas. They fight, trade, yadda yadda but no one is in control of everything.
Throughout your quest, it turns out that what is holding everyone back is a lack of power for things like lights and running water. Your job will be to determine where to get that power (Nuclear power plant in Oswego or the falls in Niagara?) And where to give it (one tribe? A few? Or all?). But that's not all, the tribes can't decide who should be in charge. One tribe wants to remain independent, don't help the outsiders and rebuild society in their image within NY, another wants to help others but would need to sacrifice their own people's safety and seclusion. Maybe another wants to be imperialist and expand their borders throughout America through way of force and fear while another agrees with taking land but wants it done through offers of protection for taxes. And each tribe has its own opinion on bringing the IC back together, staying separate, or taking over the tribes for themselves.
It's up to you character to decide who to help. Do you work hard to try and bring all tribes together under one banner or choose a side and execute their will as a paid mercenary/ambassador?
Other choices would be chaos by siding with raiders, or maybe a BOS path to take out all the tribes, idk, haven't thought it all out. Again, not a writer.
Mechanics:
So personally, I like the idea that if you choose to go with a single faction, there would a battle/war mechanic where you and an army (or alone if you really wanna try) take over and lay claim to areas similar to Nuka World where you fly the gangs flag. Nothing complicated, normal fallout fights, don't die and kill the leadehis troops to win.
Karma is back. You will garner good or bad rep with each tribe depending on what you do. I'd like an armor system like in NV but I can live without it.
There is an ending. Once you beat the game you can continue doing side quests for armoexperience/ammo but only for the tribes left in power. Occasional rebellions will rise up as random events that need to be put down.
Settlements are limited. Like skyrim, but a plot and build. No need to build one everywhere and you don't even need to do it if you don't want to.
Radio host? Gimme a Mr. New Vegas type guy. I don't want an eccentric 3-dog, I want a smoothed voiced person wishing me lady like luck.
Also, smarter AI.
Otherwise, typical FO mechanics. Weapons degrade, can upgrade weapons and armor, etc.
Main problems with NY:
No real borders to the south. Invisible walls would like be necessary which is stupid. Same to the East, but the Hudson could theoretically be used as a border if you put crazy strong mirelurks or something to kill the player if they tried to cross (or more invisible walls)
Don't want to disrespect the tribes. This is an issue with using each tribe as a possible faction. You're bound to piss off or disrespect one. So it'll be a task to make sure it's as limited as possible.
What to do with the city? It's a huge area that can be used for so much, but as a part of NY it's actually pretty seperated. It's a commercial hub now, but there's nothing there that would really be a reason to go down there. So do you make it one or do we just make it a glowing sea type area that's completely decimated from the bombs? That's my personal choice honestly, but it's a tough one to please as many as possible.
Conclusion: NY is rad.
I'll be taking questions as long as they do not involve Canadian trivia. Thank you.

TUMO high-tech school to expand / Labs / Nano-tech / Programming / Science

Education Ministry gave a 15,000m2 land in Yerevan to TUMO so it can build an engineering and scientific facility.

Education Minister Harutyunyan: // the new labs will examine nano-technologies, biotech, and artificial intelligence.
Other universities can build their own specialized labs in TUMO and cooperate with TUMO's labs, under the condition that everyone will share all labs. Adults only.

They'll teach programming to non-programmers by using a French school's curriculum. Students of all ages are welcome.
A French university's programming faculty will be established in this building.

The construction begins in 2021 and ends in 2023. The facility will be self-financed a few years later. //

Parliament voted not to discuss Education Minister's resignation

Pashinyan joins Education Minister to roast Tsarukyan

Context: yesterday the "traditionalist" opposition politicians accused Education Minister Harutyunyan of harming the Armenian language, church, history, etc. because they disagree with the upcoming major reforms. The argument heated and the Minister said you can't rape women in church then talk about the church (hinting to BHK leader Tsarukyan's rape conviction).

Pashinyan today: // it's hard not to agree with the Minister. At first, you as a sergeant of police forces invite foreign women to show them a church, then you group-rape the guests and mug them. Then you engage in the protection of national values and identity. A true "patriotism". //
https://www.facebook.com/nikol.pashinyan/posts/2752700655050312

Tsarukyan roasts back

Tsarukyan responds: // I think it's time to amend the Constitution to clearly state that people with serious mental problems should not have the right to hold high political positions and endanger the public. //

Context: it's aimed at Pashinyan. Possibly related to the former regime's media circulating rumors that Pashinyan was exempt from military service due to mental problems. The record, however, shows he was exempt because two of his brothers had already served, which disqualified him.
Former regime also spread unverified Telegram rumors that Pashinyan went to a psychiatric clinic in 2019 and they even gave a specific doctors' name. Fact-checkers found it to be false; the doctor wasn't even in Armenia.
https://armtimes.com/hy/article/195974

Ruling MPs respond to Tsarukyan / Minister's past

QP MP Alen Simonyan: // I'm confident that Tsarukyan's post about mental disorder was aimed at a fellow BHK MP Gevorg Petrosyan [the overly-traditionalist and anti-gay dude]. There are reports that he had mental problems dating back to the time when he was the Labor & Social Affairs Minister. His mental problem is why he had to leave the position after only holding the position for a few months. I'm sure the decision to replace him was made by Tsarukyan, who is currently trying to pretend to be a politician. //
https://armtimes.com/hy/article/195974

BHK replies / they didn't joke about amending Constitution

BHK MP Iveta: // whoever that [mental health Facebook] post was aimed at has understood it was for them. No doubt QP MP Alen has a vivid imagination [about it being aimed at BHK Minister]. We're serious about amending the Constitution to block officials with serious mental problems. //
https://armtimes.com/hy/article/195986

QP isn't joking, either / a bill already exists

QP MP Kristine: // then perhaps BHK should join and support the bill I introduced in 2019 which would require mental tests for MP candidates. If Parliament MPs elect a prosecutor who has to undergo a mental evaluation, why shouldn't MPs themselves undergo one?
BHK was against this bill. At the time, they said it was discriminatory and that anyone should be able to become MP. They must have had a change of mind since then. Maybe they'll support it now. //

QP summoned a meeting

The ruling party held a large meeting this evening. The PM, Governors, and Ministers were present. It wasn't over the spat with Tsarukyan.

anti-corruption reform: purchases by public officials could be monitored

Justice Minister Badasyan introduced a draft bill to amend the law to require public officials to disclose [in annual declaration form] any purchases larger than $4,000, or if a collection of similar purchases exceed $6,000 (so officials won't split the same purchase into smaller pieces to hide).

Moreover, the newly established Corruption Prevention Commission would be allowed to request an explanation if the official gains large properties within 2 years of leaving the office.

The definition of a luxury property would lower from $16,000 to $8,000 so more properties would need to be declared.
https://armtimes.com/hy/article/196000

should city council members also disclose their properties?

Another anti-corruption reform will require municipality councilmen to file the aforementioned declarations.

LHK is against this because "it adds extra burden on councilmen so the cities could lose valuable councilmen who can't manage to handle their work and file papers at the same time. It already takes a great amount of effort to convince some good councilmen to work."
QP countered LHK's argument with, "it doesn't matter that good councilman volunteer their time for the city. If they are public officials and make decisions for the public, they should file paperwork to reduce corruption."

former Yerevan State University rector is charged with embezzlement

Aram Simonyan is accused of embezzlement and/or waste. It's related to the Feb/19/2019 investigation in which he was accused of taking $10,000 in bribes. The SOC auditors had also discovered $830,000 in "damages" at the time.

It was later clarified that the new charges are about alleged embezzlement of $71,000 in 2015, which is part of that wider $830,000 corruption investigation done by SOC two years ago.

COVID stats / schools / another wave coming?

4,319 tested in one day, the highest since July. +295 infected. +162 healed. +2 deaths. 3,232 active. 252,158 tested.

Pashinyan: although the daily tests have increased, the number of daily infections has increased too, crossing 200 again. The public should be concerned.
Healthcare Ministry: 7% of tested came positive. That's higher than before.
Pashinyan: I saw street traffic for the first time since March. Probably related to school reopening. Perhaps the uptick in infections is related to the shopping/social activities that happen before the school season.
Practically, masks are our only tool to fight the virus. The police should strictly enforce the mask law. Masks aren't for covering your chin, it's for your mouth and nose.
Healthcare Ministry: we predict a rapid spread of COVID. 1 patient will infect >1 healthy. Right now it's at 1.02, just days after it was less than 1. Wash your hands and keep a distance.

Coronawalrus forces Armenians to finally explore their country

Internal tourism boomed while air travel was banned. Here are some lesser-known sites that Armenians "discovered...
Tsiranavor church
... is in Ashtarak, Aragatsotn. The legend says 3 sisters fell in love with a dude named Sargis. The two elder sisters sacrifice themselves so the small sis will be happy with Sargis. They wear orange "tsirani" dress and jumped off a cliff, hence the name Tsiranavor. (FFS)
Dashtadem Castle
Located near Dashtadem, Aragatsotn, the castle was built on the 7th century on top of an ancient Urartian castle.
Agarak historical-cultural reserve
... is near Agarak, Aragatsotn. It's a rocky promontory of volcanic tuff protrusions (god bless google translate).

Yerevan's clinics are developing

As part of a plan to develop Yerevan clinics, which are often a subject of quality-related complaints, this year the city spent $415,000 (3x vs 2018) to buy medical equipment.

Today Pashinyan decided to extend his contract. He also criticized some of the doctors who "pressured him by threatening to quit and intentionally place cancer-patient children's lives at risk."

The discrimination of ethnic Armenians in Moscow continues

Moscow's largest Azeri-owned "Food City" bazaar still won't allow Armenian sellers to place an ad sign in their booths. Sellers complain it harms trade.
Truck drivers with Armenian license plates still aren't allowed to enter, although the bazaar administration left a "loophole" and allows trucks if the plates are covered.
Moscow authorities earlier claimed the conflict was "settled" but the sellers say otherwise.
The conflict between Food City and Armenians began after Azerbaijan lost the July Battles and Food City's Azeri owner got upset at ethnic Armenian civilians.

He was a trained electrical and mechanical engineer whose discoveries and inventions included the modern electric motor, wireless transmission of energy, basic laser, radar technology, the first neon and fluorescent illumination, and the Tesla coil (widely used in radio, television sets, and other electronic equipment). Though he was a great inventor, his life was mostly marred by poverty as he was a terrible businessman. He was impractical with his money and never got involved in a relationship with anyone. Although he was regarded as a generous and polite person by his friends, he had very limited social interaction with them because of his firm daily routine. He was a loner all his life and died penniless without the accolades that he would ultimately earn after his death. He was undoubtedly one of the most influential inventors of the 20th century whose discoveries in the field of electricity were way ahead of his time. His discoveries continue to influence technology even today.
Childhood & Early Life: It all began with a storm
  • Born on July 10, 1856, in Smiljan, Croatia, Nikola Tesla was the fourth of five children of a priest and an inventor. What marked the birth of the Serbian-American boy was a lightning storm. He had eidetic memory and possessed a knack for electrical inventions. He always credited his mother’s genetic influence for his creative abilities.
  • He received his early education of German, arithmetic, and religion from a primary school in Smiljan.
  • In 1870, he was enrolled at ‘Higher Real Gymnasium’ in Karlovac and graduated the four-year course within three years in 1873, thanks to his extraordinary intelligence.
  • In 1875, he attended ‘Austrian Polytechnic’ in Graz, Austria, on a ‘Military Frontier’ scholarship. He was a brilliant student in his first year but got addicted to gambling in his second year which ruined his studies and he was not able to obtain a degree.
Career
  • In 1881, he worked as a draftsman in the ‘Central Telegraph Office’ in Budapest. Later, he became the chief electrician at the ‘Budapest Telephone Exchange’ and made significant improvements to the Central Station equipment.
  • In 1882, he was employed by the ‘Continental Edison Company’ in France as a designer of electrical equipment. After two years, he was shifted to New York to work for Thomas Edison and help him redesign the direct current generators.
  • His idea of improving Edison’s inefficient motors and generators through the polyphase alternating current system prompted Edison to promise him a prize money of fifty thousand dollars if he did it successfully. He completed his task and demanded the prize money to which Edison replied that his challenge was just a form of American humor. Tesla immediately resigned from his job.
  • Fascinated by the works of Tesla, Western Union superintendent Alfred S. Brown and attorney Charles F. Peck backed him up financially and formed the ‘Tesla Electric Company’ in 1887. This helped Tesla in developing an induction motor that ran on alternating current. He then eventually got his works patented.
  • In 1888, he was hired by industrialist George Westinghouse, who was impressed by his idea of developing the alternating current electric supply system. Ultimately, he won the war of currents over Edison’s DC system by demonstrating the marvels of electric appliances via alternating current.
  • After visiting an exposition in Paris in 1889, Tesla came to know about the existence of electromagnetic radiation which was proved by Heinrich Hertz. Soon, he established his own laboratory and invested his time and energy on numerous experiments, including the ‘Tesla Coil’ and carbon button lamp. He also experimented on the power of electrical resonance and various types of lighting.
  • He was also the vice-president of ‘American Institute of Electrical Engineers’ from 1892 to 1894. The institute later became part of the ‘Institute of Radio Engineers.’
  • In 1893, Tesla demonstrated the fully developed polyphase AC system in an exposition held at Columbia. The demonstration was conducted through ‘Westinghouse Electric’ which had his patents.
  • In 1899, he moved to Colorado Springs where he established his laboratory for creating a wireless global energy transmission system. He experimented with man-made lightning in an attempt to provide free wireless electricity throughout the world.
  • In 1900, he began his work on establishing the trans-Atlantic wireless telecommunications facility in Wardenclyffe, near Shoreham, Long Island. He performed many experiments in the facility but due to shortage of funds, he was forced to sell it around the time of World War I.
  • Later, he disclosed a method of transmitting mechanical energy with minimal loss over any terrestrial distance and a method of accurately determining the location of underground mineral deposits.
Major Works
  • His most notable contribution is the modern alternating current (AC) electricity supply system. It proved to be more efficient and effective than the direct current (DC) system of Edison.
  • One of his most celebrated inventions is the ‘Tesla Coil,’ a circuit that transforms energy into extremely high voltage charges, creating powerful electrical fields capable of producing spectacular electrical arcs.
  • In 1943, he was dubbed the ‘father of the radio’ for his significant contributions to the development of radio.
  • He played a pioneering role in the development of radar technology, X-ray technology, and rotating magnetic field—the basis of most AC machinery.

“The War of the Currents”
Tesla Electric Company was formed thanks to the financial support of 2 men Nikola Tesla met, who had experience not just in running companies, but also knowing how to advertise inventions and get their investments back. The first laboratory of the inventor was opened right there in Manhattan, where he just recently worked in Edison’s headquarters.
The rivalry between Edison and Tesla existed for years, though, and even became known as “The War of the Currents”. Tesla eventually won the war and helped bring electricity to the US. That happened as a result of his collaboration with George Westinghouse, an industrialist and inventor who noticed the brilliant mind of Tesla after reading one of his papers.

When a business idea gets stolen…
Years later Nikola Tesla demonstrated radio transmission, but his laboratory was destroyed after a fire — while he was preparing the first real radio signal.
Guglielmo Marconi, an inventor and electrical engineer from Italy, took his idea and used the same technology. The invention of the radio was credited to him. Not just that, but he also won a Nobel Prize for it in 1909. What upset Tesla even more was that the whole project was sponsored by Thomas Edison.
That turned into a court battle. Unfortunately, the truth came just after the death of Nikola Tesla when the US Supreme Court admitted the patent for the radio was originally Tesla’s idea.
A different kind of relationship
Tesla never married. He had another affection, though. That for pigeons. He fed them all the time during his walks in the park.
There was one pigeon in particular that he considered special, and even said he loved him as a man loves a woman.
Personal Life & Legacy
  • He had a strict schedule for his everyday life. He worked for almost 15 hours a day with not more than two hours of sleep. He walked for eight to ten miles each day and did not have much of a social life.
  • He had photographic memory and an ability to speak in eight languages. He never married and did not have any known relationships despite the fact that many women were madly in love with him.
  • He became a naturalized citizen of the United States in July 1891.
  • He became a vegetarian in his later years, living only on milk, bread, honey, and vegetable juices. He used to feed pigeons on an everyday basis towards the end of his life.
  • He died of unknown causes on January 7, 1943, in a hotel room in New York City. It was later confirmed that he died of coronary thrombosis.
  • ‘The Nikola Tesla Award’ is awarded annually for outstanding contribution to the generation or utilization of electric power.

Now let's go to some detailed interesting curiosities

TESLA WAS BORN DURING A LIGHTNING STORM (MAYBE)
If Nikola Tesla were a superhero, his moniker would be "Electricity Man." Sure, Benjamin Franklin might've gotten zapped through his kite, but Tesla completely revolutionized the entire field of electricity technology, making science fiction into science fact.
Though Tesla was larger than life, the popular legend about how (and when) he was born might be a little too cinematic to be true. According to Hourly History's Nikola Tesla: A Life From Beginning to End, the story goes that Tesla entered the world in 1856, in what is now Croatia, in the midst of a horrific lightning storm. Yes, that's right, the Electricity Man was supposedly born during a lightning storm. Reportedly, the storm was so bad that the midwife got the willies and told Tesla's mother that because of the nasty weather, the baby would be a "child of darkness." Luckily, Nikola's mother had no room in her life for that sort of morbid nonsense and promptly told the midwife, "No, he will be a child of light." Boom. See, isn't that the perfect superhero origin story?
It's hard to say if this exchange is a true story of a fun myth, but if Tim Burton ever directs a movie about Tesla's life, we expect to see this scene right at the beginning regardless.
HIS MOTHER SPURRED HIM ONTO SCIENCE
Whether Nikola Tesla rocketed to earth on a lightning bolt or not, we do know that his remarkable brain started diving into science from an early age. As a boy, according to Biography, young Nikola was torn in two directions. His father was a Serbian Orthodox priest who wanted his son to follow in his religious footsteps, while his mother was an inventor who liked tinkering with household appliances. Once the woman introduced science to her son, the boy's future was clear. Considering the impact Nikola's work went on to have, the world probably owes his mom a big thank-you for getting him started.
Anyway, Nikola loved studying science, and his schooling and research took him to Austria, Prague, and Budapest, where he ended up working for the Central Telephone Exchange. It was in Budapest where, one day on a leisurely walk through the park, he randomly came up with the idea for what would one day be the induction motor, one of his greatest inventions. However, Tesla didn't stay in Budapest for too long. He dreamed of setting sail for the United States, and at age 28, he finally did so. Not long after landing on America's rocky shores, he met a man named Thomas Edison.
HE WORKED WITH THOMAS EDISON

https://preview.redd.it/ijjbzx6n00451.jpg?width=830&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a8dc83ed555c2551485cc0143910fbc7b63ee260
If there were ever two inventors fated to be antagonists, it was Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison. Tesla possessed an intense, aloof, introverted personality, while Edison was a loud, boisterous businessman. According to the Tesla Memorial Society of New York, Tesla's immigration happened because of a recommendation letter that inventor Charles Batchelor wrote to Edison, stating, "I know two great men. One is you, and the other is this young man."
Inspired by their common fascination in electricity, Tesla journeyed to the U.S. with nothing but the clothes on his back, and a head buzzing with new ideas. He promptly went to work for Edison. At the time, Edison's company was using "direct current" electricity, and the newbie Tesla proposed an innovative idea: replacing the inefficient direct current setup with what Tesla called "alternating current." Edison scoffed at this, challenging Tesla to develop his ideas into a real invention. As incentive, Edison even offered the broke young European inventor a $50,000 reward, according to History.
So, Tesla gleefully pounced on the challenge, and within only a few months, he proudly offered Edison his successful results. One problem: Edison was a huge jerk about the whole thing, and he brushed Tesla off with a mean comment about how Tesla didn't understand "American humor." You can't blame Tesla for leaving Edison's company shortly afterward.
TESLA WAS RIGHT ABOUT ELECTRICITY
Here's the catch: Tesla was right, and Edison was wrong. Basically, the problem with Edison's direct current (DC) electricity setup was that it only flowed in one direction. Meanwhile, Tesla's groovy new alternating current (AC) changed direction 50 to 60 times a second, according to the Tesla Memorial Society of New York. Why did this matter? There are a lot of technical reasons, but basically, in addition to having inefficient lamps, Edison's setup required power stations to be built every 2 miles, making it a huge chore (and financial burden) to send power a long distance. Tesla's AC idea changed that.
After Edison stiffed Tesla his $50,000, Tesla responded by getting funding from George Westinghouse. Westinghouse saw the potential in AC, and decided to spread Tesla's invention across the country, powering the entire United States. The business war between Edison and Westinghouse/Tesla got pretty intense, but Tesla's technology won out because AC just ... worked better. Nothing personal.
Tesla's most notable victory came in 1896, when his AC invention harnessed the power of Niagara Falls, sending electricity all the way to Buffalo, New York. Using Niagara Falls as a power supply was a major achievement in its own right, but according to PBS, and it was also one of Tesla's childhood dreams.
THE WIZARD OF INVENTIONS

https://preview.redd.it/1dka6zap00451.jpg?width=1050&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ceb9d233e4c9a2c353d60dbba228defc14f6ee7b
Tesla crafted amazing new inventions at the same rate that some people change their socks. In addition to pioneering the use of AC, he also created the "Tesla coil," which would go on to become the basis of radio and TV today, according to Business Insider. History points out that he played around with X-rays, invented electric oscillators and meters, and worked with radio communications. As if that wasn't zany enough, Tesla then designed a remote-controlled boat, also described by History, which he hoped would forever end the use of battleships. He figured if he could create a warship that required no humans on board, it would mean less lives lost. Today, remote-controlled boats are mostly just a hobby.
One of Tesla's most infamous inventions was his supposed "earthquake machine," which he talked about to the New York World-Telegram in 1935, according to Rex Research. Tesla claimed his device could fit "in an overcoat pocket," and that he'd once triggered such a heavy earthquake in New York City that the police had rushed to his lab. Crazy, right? Mythbusters tried (and failed) to replicate his experiment, so who knows if the "earthquake machine" really worked.
ALL THE INVENTIONS HE DIDN'T FINISH

https://preview.redd.it/zu9zoetq00451.jpg?width=846&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d0d6a4fa85a9460f727962d7c7b3a06779ecd5a7
The only thing more impressive than Tesla's inventions are the ones he dreamed up, but never completed. In an effort to end all wars, Tesla at one point developed plans for a "death beam," according to PBS, which he claimed would "send concentrated beams of particles through the free air, of such tremendous energy that they will bring down a fleet of 10,000 enemy airplanes at a distance of 250 miles." Tesla's idea was to develop a weapon so insanely powerful that it would deter any countries from ever invading each other again.
Tesla's otherworldly concepts hardly ended there. According to The Week, he envisioned a future wherein all labor would be automated. Factories would be run by robots, and cars would drive themselves. Yes, Tesla predicted the self-driving car back when the whole concept of "cars" was still fresher than a spring chicken.
Tesla's strangest claim of all came in 1901, when he said he'd received radio transmissions from Mars, as described in The Electrical Age. (If anyone ever did discover Martians, it would've been Tesla.) However, History says that in 1996, scientists replicated Tesla's experiments and found that the signals were just caused by the moon Io passing through Jupiter's magnetic field. Still, Tesla gave it his best shot.
HE BELIEVED IN A WORLD OF FREE ELECTRICITY

https://preview.redd.it/gp73bns610451.jpg?width=333&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=876a12186de0b2eae69d9d3329ad5b2a9efce1ae
Believe it or not, none of this stuff even touches the scope of Tesla's most ambitious project of all: he wanted to bring free wireless electricity to everyone in the world, according to Biography. In 1901, J.P. Morgan funded Tesla's dream of building a giant transmission tower on Long Island, which the inventor named Wardenclyffe. As unbelievably awesome as free, worldwide, wireless electricity sounds, the Wardenclyffe project hit a tragic stumbling block when Tesla's investors second-guessed whether he could actually pull it off. Keep in mind, back in 1901, the internet wasn't even a twinkle in anyone's eye, so the idea of free worldwide electricity seemed like something from a fairy tale.
Anyway, once the foundation was shaken, the project collapsed. First the staff got laid off in 1906, then the tower itself was foreclosed in 1915, and Tesla went into bankruptcy by 1917. As a result, Tesla's dream of bringing us free electricity never happened. The worst part about all this is that there's probably a parallel universe somewhere where Wardenclyffe did succeed, and those lucky alternate versions of us are enjoying the benefits of $0 utility bills to this day. Too bad Tesla didn't figure out a reality-switching invention.
HE AND MARK TWAIN WERE GOOD FRIENDS

https://preview.redd.it/qmdmkybt00451.jpg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=51fb29014ca3dce238ba315db8f49ca4c9440412
Nikola Tesla wasn't known for having many friends, close associates, or even romantic partners. According to EDN, the man was so devoted to his science that he remained celibate throughout his life, believing love and marriage would interfere with his work.
However, Tesla did have one good friend you've probably heard of: Mark Twain, the author of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Twain, whose real name was Samuel Clemens, was close enough to Tesla that, according to the book Nikola Tesla: A Spark of Genius, the legendary writer was given a free pass to visit the legendary inventor's laboratory whenever he pleased. As described in James O'Neill's Prodigal Genius: The Life of Nikola Tesla, Clemens once was the victim of a rather brilliant Tesla prank, wherein the inventor asked Clemens if he wanted to test out his new vibrating mechanical oscillator device. To convince him to do so, Tesla claimed that Clemens would feel renewed "vigor and vitality" from the machine. Instead, the heavy vibrations caused Clemens to have a bowel spasm, and the author had to sprint to the nearest bathroom.
Despite the shock of this event, the two remained friends. It's a historical buddy comedy waiting to happen.
THROUGHOUT HIS LIFE, TESLA LIVED WITH MENTAL ILLNESS
Nikola Tesla experienced mental illness throughout his life, and he lived in an era where such things were not properly understood or discussed. According to History, the first signs of this manifested early in Tesla's childhood, when he claimed to see "visions" after the death of his brother Daniel. From that point on, Tesla's symptoms only become more prevalent as he aged. Tesla was intensely careful about avoiding germs. He washing his hands constantly, always using fresh towels, and avoided handshakes at all costs, according to O'Neill's Prodigal Genius. He strove to sleep only two hours a night, believing three was too much time wasted. Between these traits and his obsession with the number three — he reportedly always walked around a building three times before entering it, washed his hands three times in a row, and so on — it's often been theorized that Tesla may have had obsessive-compulsive disorder, according to the Huffington Post.
The Smithsonian raises the possibility that he also may have been on the autism spectrum, citing his self-described intense sensitivity to sounds, his excellent sensory awareness, and his violent dislike for both pearls and women's earrings, the mere sight of which were enough to, in his words, "almost give me a fit."
HE LIVED A DIFFICULT LIFE

Old Tesla
Aside from his mental illness, Tesla's life was extremely difficult in many respects. Perhaps most significantly, the great inventor was usually broke, down on his luck, and badly in debt. According to History, Tesla at one point worked a manual labor job where he dug ditches for $2 a day. In his later years, his introverted tendencies grew into an intensely reclusive nature. After the financial collapse of Tesla's beloved Wardenclyffe project, the brilliant man withdrew further and further into mental illness, becoming a hermit. His final years were spent living on the 33rd floor of the New Yorker Hotel, his primary companion being the pigeons who visited him there. Tesla reportedly spoke to these pigeons, becoming particularly close to one female pigeon whom he claimed to love as if she were a human being.
According to the Smithsonian, one of Tesla's final reports described this female pigeon visiting him at his hotel window one night, apparently to inform the inventor that she was dying. Tesla claimed to see glowing light in the bird's eyes, brighter than his own lightbulbs, and he allowed his beloved avian friend to die in his arms. According to Tesla, this strange incident was a sign that he had completed his life's work and was ready to move on.
HE ONCE PAID AN OVERDUE BILL WITH A 'DEATH BEAM'
In an interview with National Geographic, Tesla Science Center president Jane Alcorn explained that Tesla had such frequent money problems because, unlike his rival Thomas Edison, Tesla didn't care about making money. Tesla's goal was to help the world, as exhibited by his grand worldwide electricity ambitions. However, like any other member of society, Tesla still had to pay the bills, and his cash woes led to some creative solutions.
In what might be the best practical joke of all time, Tesla once paid for an overdue hotel bill by giving the managers a little wooden box which he said contained a working model of his infamous "death beam," according to History. Yeah, you read that right. No cash, no credit card, just a little box with an apocalyptic weapon of mass destruction inside it. To sweeten the deal, Tesla warned the managers to never, ever, ever open the box, for their own safety. The fearful managers heeded his warning because no one wants to set off a death beam, but when the box was finally opened years later, after Tesla's death, the only thing inside it was a bunch of scrappy old electrical components. Nice one, Nikola.
DEATH AND RESURGENCE
Like so many of history's greatest mavericks, Nikola Tesla never truly received the respect he deserved. By the time he died in his hotel room in 1943, he was seen as more of a bizarre science fiction spectacle than a brilliant icon, a perception which the Smithsonian argues may have been created by Tesla's "willingness to play the mad scientist," by making wild claims in tabloid magazines. According to a New York Times piece from 1984, it wasn't until nearly 40 years after Tesla's death that society began to acknowledge the sheer magnitude of his impact on the world, and to realize how great his contributions truly were.
In the past few decades, public perception of Tesla has been coming around. According to National Geographic, a brand new Tesla statue was unveiled on Long Island in 2013. The Wardenclyffe site has been converted into the Tesla Science Center. The airport in Belgrade, Serbia, proudly displays Nikola Tesla's name. And of course, there's Elon Musk's famous Tesla company, which follows Nikola's path by developing new technologies for the future. Though Nikola Tesla struggled throughout his life, the history books will look back on him fondly.
Lessons from Nikola Tesla’s Life Story
As unusual as Nikola Tesla was, we can’t deny all the wisdom, purpose and will that make his life story what it is.
He once worked for 84 hours straight, without sleeping. That’s how passionate he was about the work he was doing. He spoke 8 languages and left the world with more than 300 patents. He admits he never cared about money, the laws of physics were his religion instead. The great inventor believes in doing our best in order to create a better future.
“Our virtues and our failings are inseparable, like force and matter. When they separate, man is no more.”

Total Drama World Tour: Staring Generation Three!

Yesterday, I made a post about the Revenge cast in Action, so now it’s time for the Pahkitew cast in World Tour, with Sierra and Alejandro joining them. To get one thing out of the way, Sierra and Alejandro are here because without them, the cast would be to small. Also, they joined as newbies in World Tour, and here, everyone is a newbie, so Sierra and Alejandro are gen 3 in this universe. Anyway, let’s get started.
Episode 1: Chris introduces the new cast, and also the new gimmick, singing. Reactions were mixed about this, Sierra, Topher and Ella thought it was a great idea, Jasmine, Dave, and Max were just annoyed, and others were just indifferent. The first challenge was located in Egypt, where they could choose to climb over, or go through a Pyramid. Nobody quits because there isn’t enough people. At the end, Chris announced that there were three teams this season, and he was to lazy to make names, so the contestants had to do it. The teams were dubbed...
The Dastardly Evil Masterminds: Shawn, Topher, Max, Jasmine, Sky, and Scarlett.
The Marvelous Magicians: Dave, Leonard, Beardo, Alejandro, and Sierra.
The Midwestern Actresses: Sugar, Amy, Sammy, Ella, and Rodney.
Song: Come Fly With Us
Episode 2: The episode began after the teams were formed, they each got prizes for a camel race. The Actresses won a camel, the Magicians won a goat, and the Masterminds were stuck with a stick. Suddenly, they all had to run away from a swarm of bugs, and make it to the Nile River while doing it. The teams had to weave a basket big enough to support the weight of the team members, and their prize. Sierra was really good with a weave, while the masterminds, having a lot of smart people, were good too. The Actresses were a lost cause, having there boat being completely awful, but thankfully for them.
17th, Max: He has a new invention that could turn animals evil. He used it on a Crocodile, thinking it would attack the other team, but it went crazy, destroying all the boats, and the Masterminds were the team that came last. He was shocked to be voted off, and clinger onto the plane when he was tossed out, and climbed into the cargo hold.
Song: Running Time
Episode 3: Chris said the next challenge would be in Japan, Scarlett started complaining that the outfit was actually Chinese, so chef cut the door open, which we sucked all the teams out the door, falling to the ground. Luckily, they landed in a big bowl of rice, and Alejandro complimented on her smarts, but she didn’t fall for his charms. The challenge was to make a commercial for Chef’s new food. Scarlett has a basic understanding of commercials, and Topher was a good actor, it came as a shock to nobody when they won first class. Leonard was annoying Dave with his LARPing, and Alejandro took this as an opportunity to mess with him. He told Leonard that his skills with leading parties and such could make him a great team leader, he accepted this challenge, and took it upon himself to lead the team. He did horribly, and the Magicians were going to lose, until...
16th, Sugar: A certain redhead stole the footage for the Actresses commercial, and corrupted it, they had the worst commercial, and Amy blamed the loss on Sugar. Leonard was celebrating the victory, but Dave intimidated him, saying that if it wasn’t for the corruption, he would be gone, and he should quit LARPing.
Song: Before We Die
Episode 4: The Juno Jet landed in the freezing winters of the Yukon, teams had to jump across ice flows to pull a sled to victory. Jasmine pulled the sled for the Masterminds, Dave also tries attracting Sky, which she’s flattered by. Beardo also becomes more social, and Ella and Sammy form a friendship. Leonard has to pull his sled, and didn’t try to use magic, he still came last, but the Actresses are missing a member.
15th, Rodney: His tongue was stuck to a pole, and the Actresses couldn’t find him. He tried to say he was tricked, but was pushed out. Scarlett stood behind a pillar smirking, revealing that she was the one who did this.
Song: Country Love
Episode 5: The challenge took place in New York, they had to climb the Statue of Liberty to get a baby carriage, Amy was excited to sing in New York, but Ella was a bit more focused on her bullying. Alejandro also started playing Sierra, telling her to talk about embarrassing things Chris did, which got him mad. Topher also lost a bit of respect he had for him. The challenge was also the first reward challenge, and nobody was sent home.
Song: What’s Not To Love?
Episode 6: The first aftermath. Like last time, the couples of last season were the host every episode. This episode was with Lightning and Anne Maria as hosts, both being stupid, they weren’t very good. Also, there was a new segment called total Drama fugitives, where an eliminated contestants was missing, that contestant being Max.
Peanut Gallery: Whiskers, Keith, Jose, Chef (Topher’s cat)
Interviews: Sugar, and Rodney.
Song: Cap-try Style
Episode 7: Contestants were dropped into a massive pile of snow, where they had to be quiet and sing. Alejandro started telling Amy to “Seize the day” which she knew exactly what that meant. Scarlett took notice of this. The seconded part of the challenge was to shove meat into a meat grinder, which disgusted Dave. Speaking of Dave, him and Beardo has become good friends at this point, though he still hated Leonard, even though he was becoming a somewhat normal person. The final part of the challenge was a German Slap-off, which Jasmine dominated in, being much stronger than everyone else.
Xth, Amy: Scarlett started taunting her on the platform, which she go annoyed by, and threw her and herself off the platform. She beat her up so bad she nocked a tooth out. She cost the team the challenge, and Sammy and Ella celebrated having such a menace gone. Alejandro started talking to Scarlett about what she did, but she said she knows that he’s evil.
Song: German Slap-off!
Episode 8: The teams were dropped off at the Amazon, and Chris said that he had a special announcement. The Actresses were going to merge with the other teams, Sammy was going on the Masterminds, while Ella was going to the Magicians. Jasmine started leading the team around the jungle, and was impressed when Shawn knew a lot about forests, forming a quick friendship. Leonard tried to lead the team, but ended up getting them captured by the Zing Zings. Luckily, Beardo managed to scare them off with his sound effects, but they were at a massive disadvantage. The Masterminds won, and Leonard was going to be voted off, but it was announced to be a reward challenge.
Song: It’s All Your Fault!
Episode 9: Paris, the place of art, and love. Leonard was upset that Dave was so mean to him, and Beardo wanted him to apologize. Alejandro defended him though, saying he could think what he wants, if he was going to dig his own grave, so be it. Sammy and Topher started to fall for each other, and Shawn started falling for Jasmine after realizing how wicked cool she was. The Masterminds found there prices really fast, and to ensure such a victory...
14th, Leonard: Scarlett pushes down the Magician’s statue and blamed it on Leonard, he tried to defend himself, but Dave has already made up his mind, and was glad to be gone of such an annoyance.
Song: Oui, My Friends
Episode 10: Why did they land in the middle of the ocean? To have the next challenge of course! Contestants had to race boats to the eastern shore. Alejandro and Scarlett rivalry was starting to get really high, and Alejandro was trying to play Ella, while Dave was trying to impress Sky, and Beardo was encouraging him. The seconded part was a challenge where they had to do very odd tasks. The last part was kissing a cod. Beardo told Dave to imagine he was kissing Sky, and he forgot all about how gross it was, while Shawn did the same thing, but for Jasmine. Jasmine has also taken notice off Sammy’s crush on Topher, and was trying to get them together. In honor of Chris being in his homeland, he made it a reward challenge, and nobody was sent home.
Song: Sea Shanty
Episode 11: The Jumbo Jet has crashed in the deserts of Jamaica, and one contestant had been very injured. The show had to go on though, and a challenge had begun. Contestants had to dive off a cliff into waters filled with sharks. Alejandro ended up grabbing the gold, but Scarlett stole it. The seconded part was to skateboard through a very dangerous obstacle course. The Masterminds has more physically dominate players, but the Magicians just edged it out.
13th/12th, Dave and Sky: Dave was the contestant injured by the Jumbo Jet, and had to be removed from the game. Sky and Beardo were very upset about this, but Alejandro worked his Magic to get Sky distracted, and lose the challenge.
Song: Watch The Fang!
Episode 12: The seconded aftermath. Despite not being a couple, Brick and Jo were instructed by the network to host the aftermath, as their fighting would real in money. Why did they need money? To repair the Jumbo Jet, the aftermath hosted a telethon to gain funds for the season again. There was many things going on, like Sky, Dave and Keith Drama, why Leonard LARPs, Amy joining the fugitives party, and how Jo singing in a dress in hilarious.
Song: Save This Show
Interviews: Leonard, Sky, and Dave.
Episode 13: Alejandro suddenly went missing, which Chris pretended didn’t happen. The teams were dropped off in London, and had to an advanced version of the psycho killer challenge. The teams had to solve riddles to find out were Jack the Ripper was hiding, while the Ripper was hunting them down. Jasmine and Shawn formed an amazing team together, while Beardo, Ella, and Sierra were becoming the next team E-scope. In the end, Jasmine and Shawn caught the real killer, while diet team E-scope caught a fraud. That fraud was actually Amy, which the others were shocked by, sense she was here, Chris said she could rejoin the game in staid if Max. When questioned about Max, Chris reveled who the Ripper really was, a feral Max, who had turned green and was losing hair. He was tossed back out, but he clung onto the wing again.
11th, Sammy: Scarlett told Amy that she was going to be voted out. Amy started panicking and begged her for a solution, Scarlett said she would give one as long as she joined in on her alliance. She agreed, and Scarlett suggested a switch. She disguised herself as Sammy, and Sammy tried to warn them, but was pushed out before she could say anything.
Song: Strip Them Down
Episode 14: The teens were going to compete in some Olympic event, and they almost landed in the wrong place, but was fixed thanks to Scarlett, Jasmine, and Alejandro. It came down to the tiebreaker, and Alejandro noticed something odd with Shawn, and riled him to tell everyone what he knows. He said that he saw Topher and Amy kiss, and apparently, Topher has no idea Sammy was gone, but Jasmine was too made to listen, and told Topher that she was going to beat him like a kangaroo. At the elimination ceremony, Topher was going to be eliminated, but Chris didn’t want to eliminate him with all the drama going on, so he got to play another day.
Song: Greek Trickery
Episode 15: In one of the most dangerous challenges yet, the teens had to raid area51, and steal an alien artifact. Jasmine started comforting Shawn when he started freaking out about conspiracy theories, and Topher tried his hardest to win, knowing he was going to be eliminated. Ella’s singing and Beardo’s beatboxing were enough to distract the aliens, however...
10th, Sierra: She stepped on a mine while running with the artifact, and it gets destroyed. Alejandro suggests voting her off to put her out of her misery, and Beardo and Ella don’t want to do it, but they had to.
Song: Cheating Boyfriend
Episode 16: Jasmine was excited to visit her home town Australia. Shawn took it upon himself to try impressing her about being good with the challenge. While the other team was good with animals, Jasmine absolutely crushed them, and they had to send someone packing.
9th, Beardo: Scarlett thew a dingo at him, which made him dizzy. When it came to voting, Ella voted for Alejandro, Alejandro votes for Beardo, and Beardo was so dizzy he accidentally voted for himself.
Song: Native Rock
Episode 17: The third ice challenge of the season. The two teams had to build a boat, and battle Viking style, the first ship to sink would lose. Topher was starting to get more saddened by Sammy leaving, while Shawn, a sort-of-friend of Topher’s, tried helping him out. In the end, The Magicians finally won a challenge, with Alejandro carrying them, as Ella was completely against violence. It was completely pointless anyway, as it was a reward challenge, and many have speculated that the challenge was just filler.
Song: We Built Sam’s Face
Episode 18: One of the most important aftermaths. Mike and Zoey hosted this time, and they put on a game show in which an eliminated contestant, or member of the Peanut Gallery would join the game.
Song: His Real Name Isn’t Beardo
Winner: Jose
Interviews: Sammy, Sierra, and Beardo.
Episode 19: The contestants were woken up falling into Niagara Falls, they had to rapidly save themselves. Topher got the adrenaline to save them after Amy said that if they lived, she would admit that Samey is better than her. Chris took the survivors to a casino, Amy was excited to gamble, but was disappointed to find themselves on a show stage. Chris announced that a new contestant would be joining the game, and Alejandro paled when he found out it was his brother Jose. Everyone was charmed by his looks, even the guys. Chris then said that they were gonna have some arranged marriages, and the guys were put into a slot machine, and the girls would have to gamble to see who they would get. The pairs were: Shawn and Jasmine, Alejandro and Scarlett, Topher and Amy, and Jose and Ella. The grooms had to guide their wives threw an optical course to get a dress, everyone succeeded. The grooms then had to carry their wife across a tight rope to get to America. Alejandro took the time to confront Scarlett about the eliminations she caused, while Scarlett counters with the eliminations he caused, they end up fighting, and falling off. Jose also stole Ella’s heart. While Topher and Amy fought a lot. In the end, Shawn and Jasmine has the most chemistry, and won. Shawn also asked Jasmine out, and she accepted, they were now a couple.

However, they both failed in the eating challenge, and even though her stomach wasn’t that good, Scarlett managed to beat Shawn in the eating challenge.
Winner: Scarlett
7th/6th, Jose and Ella: Alejandro ended up being the one to crawl to Scarlett, and asked her to help him vote out Jose, Scarlett agreed, as long as he was her slave for the rest of the game. Shawn votes for Jose because he was getting jealous of him attracting Jasmine, Jasmine, Topher, and Jose voted for Ella do to being annoying, and Ella voted for Jasmine because Jose told her to. The producers were breathing down Chris’s neck, so he kicked them both out of the plane to save costs.
Song: Chinese Lesson
Episode 21: The contestants were taken to the scorching hot deserts of Africa, were they had to hunt down a completely Feral Max. After everything he went through, Max still didn’t learn, and crawled back onto the plane.
Winner: Jasmine
5th, Topher: Scarlett talked to Shawn and Jasmine, and told them that Topher had to go, saying that him and Alejandro would team up and take them down if she was gone, they didn’t want to vote out there friend, but Scarlett’s words were just to convincing. Jasmine later beat herself up over it for falling for her schemes.
Song: Wake Up
Episode 22: The not really campers were dropped off at Easter Island, and had to do an egg hunt. There were statues of the eliminated contestants around, and when Alejandro questioned it, Chris pretty much told him to shut up. When everyone had gathered their eggs, they had to deliver it back to the mother Condor. Shawn won because it was as easy as climbing trees.
Winner: Shawn
Song: Condor
Episode 23: The final four landed in drumheller, they had to find bones to make a dinosaur. In the end, Shawn’s weird poop Dino won. Later, they had to retrieve buried cans of oil. Again, Shawn won, and Scarlett and Alejandro teamed up to take out Jasmine.

Unfortunately for him, they candles created a bunch of sparks, and fell into the oil puddle below him. Song: I’m Gonna Make It

The two finalists got helpers to preform the challenge, Scarlett chose Amy and Jose, while Alejandro chose Shawn and Jasmine. The two races up the volcano, and Alejandro was going to win, when Scarlett started playing dumb. She said she liked him, but actually kicked him in the kiwis, and sent him flying down the mountain. She said that she never liked him anyway, and that he was an idiot for believing the facade. Before a prize could be given to the winner, Max came up from behind, stole the case, and fell into the volcano. It erupted, and the teens had to run for their lives, and Chris ended off the season.
Winner: You chose.
Song: Versus
Anyway, you may have noticed that some of this was similar to World Tour, but the Pahkitew cast doesn’t have much depth to them, shocker, I know. If there is anything you would change, please let me know, as any advice if greatly appreciated, and whose ending do you prefer?

A gift to /r/Vagabond: "On Running Away" - an essay by John Keats

I came across this essay, “On Running Away,” in the fall of 1969 when I was a senior in high school. It was in a book of 25 essays called, “The Edge of Awareness.”
This particular essay had a big impact on my life. After graduating from high school I yoyo-ed up and down the east coast with my thumb for about a year and a half, and then – in the summer of 1976 – I spent nine weeks with my girlfriend hitch-hiking from Philadelphia to Los Angeles, up the West Coast to Vancouver, and then across Canada to Niagara Falls & back down to Philadelphia. And there were other adventures after that that I can trace to this essay.
(Even now, as I write this, my wife and I are on a cargo ship from Baltimore, MD to Hamburg, GE. In the face of myriad uncertainties during the planning and preparations, I smiled inwardly as I recalled the essay and the author’s reference to the Churchill quote.)
I lost my own copy of the book decades ago, but then found a used copy on Amazon a while back. When I re-read it after so many decades, I got the same thrill I got when I read it the first time almost 50 years ago. I gave it to my wife to read, and she said, “I can see why guys like you would like it.”
So I painstakingly copied the essay into a Word document, and I am posting it online so that some of you might draw the same inspiration that I drew from it.
Enjoy!

On Running Away, John Keats, 1965
Ralph and I considered the possibility of police pursuit. We briefly debated the advisability of disguises. We decided that the wisest course was to try to postpone pursuit. To that end, we would tell our parents that we had each been invited by the other boy's family to spend the summer in Michigan. We made our secret plans, and one afternoon, shortly after high-school graduation, we uttered our little lies and headed for the railroad yards. That evening, while our families were no doubt discovering that neither owned a summer camp in Michigan, we were already far from our comfortable New Jersey suburb, rattling west across America. Our object was to get to China to join the American Volunteer in its aerial combat against the Japanese.
Two weeks later America was still rattling past, but now there was not a tree or house in sight. We slid the boxcar door wide open at dawn to see a vast prairie, pale gold in the east, dark in the west. Mountaintops shone above the shadows as they caught the first light. We were lonely, stiff from sleeping on a jittering wooden floor, cold, and tired of eating canned dog food. I have a clear memory of that morning in the morning of my life, now more than a quarter century ago. I can see in the mind's eye those empty distances, and feel again the emptiness inside me. I am certain that Ralph was as fearful as I that day, but we did not admit our misgivings to each other. That would have been as much an admission of failure as returning home.
As we sat in the open doorway, watching the day brighten and the Rockies draw slowly nearer, I reflected on the recent past. No small part of the charm of running away from home lay in the presumption that the world was full of dangers. Naturally, we were eager to encounter them. Nothing was more pleasant than to imagine returning home as bronzed soldiers of fortune, bearing interesting scars and laden with the gifts of a grateful Chinese government. En route to the wars we would, of course, slay the usual number of local dragons. We were not running away from life but into it. We were sure that what we had left behind was lifeless. Our New Jersey suburb was pudgy with Buicks and Packards; a thing of clean linen, toothbrushes, electric razors, the once-a-week sound of the maid running the vacuum cleaner, and the empty conversations of soft-bellied people who worked in offices and played bridge and went to Bermuda in the spring.
Our own view of ourselves, now that we rode boxcars and rolled our own cigarettes, was that we were tough. We wore blue denims, and soot from the coal-burning trains was ground into our denims and our skin. Our adolescent stubble always seemed to be three days old. The men we met were, for the most part, illiterates. The only woman we had seen on the trains had been a moron who was the chattel of a man who offered her to us for a dime each. One of the boys we met was a male prostitute bound for Los Angeles. Two of the men in the gondola ahead of us looked to be thieves. There was no question about it: we were seeing Life. Unfortunately, it only too closely resembled the one we had left.
I could not help thinking, as we clacked along, that we knew the two thieves at home. One was a member of the Rotary; the other, a minister's son. How was the man with the moron different from the parents who haunted summer hotels in the perpetual hope of selling their unattractive daughter into matrimony? One of our high school classmates had been established in a New York apartment by a successful businessman. The difference between that boy and the one headed for Los Angeles was that the one moved in wealthier -- I almost said better -- circles. I have said that Ralph and I were inwardly fearful, but I should make clear that what we secretly feared was that life would prove not challenging but merely dull. In fact, we were finding it not only dull but dirty.
There were perils, but they were largely mechanical. For instance, one of our fellow passengers, an elderly nondescript, had made the mistake of dozing in the sunlight near the forward edge of a boxcar roof. When the cars banged together as the fast freight began to brake, clattering down the long hill into Cheyenne, the first sudden lurch tossed him forward, off the roof and under the wheels, instantly bisecting him. One night when Ralph and I sheltered from the rain in a sort of cave formed by overhanging boards piled on a flatcar, we narrowly escaped a similar fate when the load shifted as we rounded a curve. Stupidity, we realized, was lethal. But where were the unknown dangers with which the world was supposedly replete? Specifically, where were the toughs and murderers who, in the public mind, so thickly populated the hobo jungles and the Hoovervilles?
We met none. The well-fed burghers of our hometown, to whom the Depression was more of a nuisance than a catastrophe, regarded the scarecrows of the Hoovervilles as dubiously as a French marquis might have looked on a Parisian mob in 1790, but they were wrong. At least in the West, the hobo jungles were merely unofficial public campsites tenanted by a slowly changing population of migrants down on their luck. Feeling a need for governance, these men formed their own. Many were veterans of World War I, and in camp after camp a former sergeant was elected or appointed leader. He greeted new arrivals, assigned them huts or sleeping spaces, and explained the rules: No fighting, thieves get beat up, you keep your place clean. And remember, try to bring back something for chow. Everyone brings something for chow.
In the America of those days everyone understood everyone else's problem, because it was also his own. If a man could not find work in one town, he tried another. Having no money to spend on transportation, he thumbed rides (which those who had cars were glad to offer), or he hopped a freight (while brakemen looked the other way). The people on the road were not derelicts. The derelicts, then as now, lived in Skid Rows in our cities. All the men and boys on the road, however modest their abilities and backgrounds, were looking for work. Some were bindle stiffs, who had known nothing all their lives except stoop labor, moving forever from harvest to harvest. Others were genuine hobos -- men who could work at nearly any trade, but whose free choice it was to hold no job long. All hobos said they intended to settle down someday, but not just yet. There was still a lot of country they wanted to see first. With rare exceptions, we met none but friends. Perhaps it is true that in good times no one takes to the road but the bad, but in our bad times we met virtually none but the good.
Ralph and I had looked for jobs wherever the trains stopped on our way through the Midwest, and while we found none, there were always housewives who would put their cares aside to consider ours. They would give us make-work so that we should not seem beggars. We would wash the windows, or whitewash the henhouse, or clean the yard or the rain gutters, and while we puttered, the woman would prepare us a meal. Often as not they would give us a package of food to take to the train. In small towns everyone knew the train schedules, and sometimes we would be told, "Gracious, there is some work I do want done, but you boys won't have time for it before the train leaves, so why don't you just sit down and I'll try to find something in the icebox."
It was disappointing to be welcomed everywhere, when it was so important to learn whether we could make our unaided way through a violent world. Of course, we heard that the railroad detectives were the sadistic enemies of the tramp. We heard that they loved nothing more than to beat a defenseless man insensible and toss his body on an outbound freight. The most famous of these detectives was one Green River Slim. Alas, we never saw a yard detective, and Green River Slim turned out to be just as imaginary, and as ubiquitous, as that other great American whose name was found chalked up on a thousand boxcars (and who would later go to war) -- Kilroy.
In retrospect it is clear to me that Ralph and I were the only people of our acquaintance on the road who were dangerous. We were looking for trouble; everyone else was looking for work. Our ambition was to kill Japanese for fun and money, and meanwhile prove to the world how tough we were. Nobody seemed to view us in just this light except, perhaps, a toothless old wreck, with breath like a vulture's, who accosted us outside a Skid Row bar in Chicago.
"Want to see how hard you can hit?" he asked us. "Gimme a quarter, I'll let you hit me. See can you knock me out."
He followed us for nearly a block, pleading, promising not to hit back, flattering us, and finally, when he saw it was of no use, cursing. Looking back on it, I think we fled from him.
Novelty, rather than true discovery, entertained us to the foothills of the Rockies. It would be years before we learned the truth of Montaigne's remark that the traveler must take himself wherever he goes. Yet I do remember that our first sight of those mountains seemed a mockery; I remember the feeling of emptiness they created inside me. In themselves they were an enormous fact, and consideration of one fact led to a consideration of others. One was that no one wanted us to do anything for him except leave town; people were glad to help us on our way.
Another was that we had nothing to offer anyone except manual labor, which was not in demand, or our money, which was. We had left home with two hundred dollars between us, all saved from the unearned money our families had allowed us. It had cost us thirty dollars to purchase blankets, denims, work shoes and sufficient dog food to carry us to South Dakota. Canned dog food recommended itself to us as the cheapest comestible to be had. It constituted a balanced diet, and was rather tasty -- at first.
The meals donated by housewives were occasional banquets, but as the train rolled farther west and the towns thinned out, dog food became our staple, and it seemed that we might have to consume another hundred and seventy dollars' worth of it if we could not immediately find a ship for China. I now suspect what caused my feeling of emptiness was a premonition that one could not live without money, but that no one could earn money save at the loss of one's freedom. The world seemed a jail.
In the high Rockies, two boys boarded our train. They were Louis Wang, a Chinese-American of Fresno, and Phillip Benoff, a Russian-American from Los Angeles. They had gone adventuring to the East Coast and now were returning to California: Phil to join the Army and Louis to join a gambling house where he would run a dice table. We told them of our plans, and they decided to come along with us instead. In that moment we became an army, and the world brightened considerably. Changed by the alchemy of a dream, the mountains' vast sterility was transformed into magnificence. We would sort the facts of life to suit ourselves. Crossing the Pacific would be no problem. Everyone knew that boys could get jobs as wipers to work a passage. Boys had been running away to sea for centuries. We had only to find a ship that needed four wipers.
Before it was over, we must have walked the docks of every port of the West Coast -- including those of minor fishing towns. "Were we members of the Union?" No. "Let's see your identification papers." We had none.
"Do you have passports?" Passports?
We went to the union offices. "Buddy, we've got 3,000 guys on the bench, and every single one of them is an Able Seaman."
Ralph and I, blue-eyed and blond, went to the Scandinavian shipping companies, saying, "Ay an Swade. Ay yust want ship home." And they laughed and said they were sorry.
We persisted until someone finally told us the truth about the American Volunteer Group. It seemed that the volunteers had been carefully selected by the United States government from its ranks of Army, Navy, and Marine Corps pilots. We went to the recruiting offices, only to be told that we would need at least two years of college credits to qualify for the aviation-cadet programs. At this point, we all went to Fresno with Louis to think things over.
College was out of the question for Louis and Phil, but Ralph and I had only to ask to go, and our parents would send us. In Fresno, I began to see the fallacy of our position: our confidence in ourselves had all along been based on the assumption that we were different from other men: not on the slightest feeling of identify with mankind. This could not be helped; we were what our first eighteen years made us. At any moment we could have walked out of the shacks of the hobo jungle to the nearest Western Union office, and hours later been dressed in decent clothes, sitting down to the best dinner in the best hotel of whatever town it was, while a hotel clerk booked reservations for us on the next Pullman headed for Newark, New Jersey. The difference between us and all others was, as Smollett would say, wholly matter-money. In the back of our minds we had always known this, and it was the source of our strength and the source of our great weakness; it made us hold something back in our relationship with others; we were never identifying with them; thus, a barrier, built of dollars, shut us off from the kindness of Midwestern housewives, and from Louis and Phil. We and the other people on the road were of different tribes.
I do not mean to say that I worked all this out in so many words at age eighteen, sitting at the bar of a tacky one-story gambling house in Fresno, watching Chinese playing fan-tan and Americans shooting craps. I simply mean that I was then dimly but uneasily aware of what I am now saying. I remember that we did wonder aloud whether going back home to college would not be an admission of defeat, but that we rationalized our way to the view that the only path to war in the Chinese skies led through two years of college followed by an aviation-cadet program. This decided, we broke what had been a summer-long silence and wrote our first letters home.
The immediate answer was a large check, which we expected, and the utterly demoralizing news – which we had not expected – that our parents, confident that we would get over our silliness, had already entered us in college for the fall term. In those days not many colleges demanded College Entrance Examination Test scores, but all of them had vacancies and most were willing to pretend that the customer was always bright.
Our parents’ casual certainty about us was infuriating. We therefore determined upon one final gesture that would restore to us something of our romantic view of ourselves as hard, tough men. Louis Wang had a motorcycle. It he would let us borrow it, we would ride it east and send it back to him. Ralph’s father owned a manufacturing concern (Ralph showed Louis the company letterhead) and Ralph would have the shipping department crate the motorcycle and send it back.
Oddly enough, Louis agreed. Perhaps he was intrigued by our idea of driving across the continent without stopping except for gasoline. We all wondered if anyone had done this before; if it really could be done; if so, in how little time. So Louis showed us how to start and stop the thing, and we bought a pillow in a five-and-ten-cent store to wire onto the back fender to form a seat for the one who would not be driving. It would not take us long to learn how to drive it, Louis said. We shook hands and went blasting out of Fresno forever.
We raced furiously to Sacramento; scuttered over the mountains and into Reno with our backsides beginning to turn black and blue. We sped across the salt flats; paused for gasoline, coffee and a bottle of whiskey at a Wyoming town where all three were sold at the town’s one store. Our headlights, at ninety miles an hour, suddenly illuminated white-faced Herefords wandering across an open range in Montana, and we went off the road to avoid them, shouting and scattering gravel and cattle; somehow wobbled back onto the road again and out of the herd. We gradually drew closer to what we believed were the lights of a town, shining far ahead in the clear Western distances, only to realize at last that, in our grogginess, we were creeping nearer and nearer to the tailgate of an enormous, brightly lighted trailer truck. We drank black coffee at the next gas pump; coffee laced with whiskey. We also fell asleep while rounding a curve in Iowa. I remember seeing a shower of sparks, and eventually realizing they were caused by the foot peg grinding along the pavement while the centrifugal force and an unbanked curve were keeping us alive. I shouted at Ralph to stop trying to show off, and he woke up suddenly, caught himself, and swerved back to our own side of the road.
Eighty hours after leaving Fresno we were streaking along the new Pennsylvania Turnpike at night, chased by police. They did not arrest us. They merely wanted to tell us the road was not yet open; that a thousand yards ahead was a place where the first bridge would be, when it was built. When we reached New Jersey we slept for two days, and it was some days later before the swelling left our hand and arms and the bruises faded from out buttocks.
Then, having nothing better to do, we went to college. We hated that. The boys and girls who went to college were nothing but tame kids who would unquestionably evolve into bridge players who made nonconversation. They joined fraternities, cheered at the games, did their homework, earned their grades, went to the dances and swung and swayed with Sammy Kaye; while we, in our arrogant innocence, looked derisively upon all this from an outside world. We were different. We were 6,000 miles by boxcar and motorcycle apart from them. We knew it, and they did, too. Just to be sure they knew, we always rolled our own cigarettes on campus and dressed in our own sooty denim pants.
Looking back on it now, it seems odd to say that we felt such a difference between ourselves and the collage children, particularly when I have already said that we, in a formless way, had begun to suspect that the artificial differences between one man and another are inconsequential when compared to the real similarities that unite them. Moreover, Ralph and I were now back among our own kind. Why, then, the studied insolence of the Bull Durham and the dirty Levi’s?
I suppose, now, that the pose and the costume were our own way of saying to other collegians, You know nothing about it. We would sit in economics class, and the others would brightly chatter with the young doctoral student who was our instructor, and I would slump back in my chair with my hands in my pockets, angry and silent, hearing nothing of this footless patter of cyclical depressions. Instead, I would see in my mind’s eye a filling station door open, and the woman in a man’s coat and hat emerge, a scarf wrapped around her nose and mouth to keep out the driving dust; she would wad another protective rag around the nozzle of the hose and the opening of the gas tank to put two dollars’ worth of gasoline into a wretched jalopy crowded with an empty-faced family of spindly children and bearing on its roof rug-wrapped bundles and the flat steel web of a cheap double bed, and hear the man ask whether, instead of paying with money, he could stay and work for two days.
An ad hominin approach to Economics 201A was not a certain path for success in the subject, but I cared nothing for the course and less for the grade. The feeling grew on me that no one in college, including the smug young instructors with the Phi Beta Kappa keys, knew what the devil he was talking about; that they were all playing at an intellectual game that insulted the dignity of experience.
This was not a feeling I could put into words at the time. I had only the unexpressed knowledge, sitting silent inside me, that there was no place for me then, or perhaps ever, in any world I did not make for myself. Indeed, in retrospect, this seems to have been the cardinal lesson of our summer’s trip. It will be seen that Ralph and I failed to make our dream come true: that our first young research for the stuff of life proved only that we were not at home in either the suburban or the proletarian worlds. Nor were we at home in the academic world. In fact, we would never be at home in any patterned world. No one ever is. No matter how much we share with all mankind, each of us is bitterly alone. Our true distance from our neighbor begins to yawn when we at length discover the unexplored darkness within ourselves, and begin to understand that he who travels farthest and fastest into this darkness must travel alone; and that the ultimate destination of every traveler is always himself.
It was just this sense of the void within us that our trip had given us; it was our first urgent command to get to work and fill the void; our summer trip provided us with our first inkling that our claims to identity would be entirely determined by our experience of ourselves.
In this sense, I can say that some part of me, now and forever, answers to the sounds of a train whistling lonely in the night, and to the deep tones of foghorns in the mists of the Northwestern coast. Some part of me is still the boy sweating at unloading watermelons from a truck in Portland; I am still shivering atop a cattle car in the winds driving through the snow-covered high passes. There is still in whoever I am the wink of campfires and the sight of the drunken man jumping across a fire and someone hitting him with a railroad spike and him falling into the fire. I can still see the lights of San Francisco and of Alcatraz from Coit Tower, and the delicate faces of the Chinese girls that Louis found for us. I have a memory of walking the dock in the rain of Seattle, and of sleepless nights in the fumigated cots of flophouses run by the Gospel Mission; of the Western wastelands creeping past and a hawk swooping on a gopher. Most clearly, I can see the faces of hopeful men who would never know anything other than disappointment, and the burst of spray against the rocks and among the tidal pools of Monterey. I remember lying on rattling floorboards at night, wondering whether I would wind up in jail, or whether any girl would ever want to marry me, and if I would ever see my family again. I have many memories, and if I am not sure yet what all of them mean, I am nonetheless certain that whoever I am is whatever my memories have made me; that I am becoming whatever I can find out about myself.
Nagging at my mind is Churchill’s remark that “without a measureless and perpetual uncertainty, the drama of human life would be destroyed.” I suppose that each of us, in his own way and at this own time, ventures as far as he chooses to dare in search of himself. Amy Lowell wondered, “Christ! What are patterns for?” They are largely for the timid; for those who find them comfortable. It seems to me that an adventure must be defined as an undertaking whose end it is impossible to know.
That is why I applaud the youthful dramatis, the would-be adventurer, who breaks the pattern, who with mounting excitement writes the farewell note and slips out the window at dead of night to set off afoot for the railroad yards to board a freight bound for California. I believe I know how he feels. More important, I know that he is not running away from something so much as he is running toward something: toward life; toward himself; toward an end that cannot be known.
I wish him well. His chances of finding what he seeks are never good, but they are at least better than the chances of those who stay at home, placidly accepting the patterns they never made, or choose.
