(see disclaimer below). Shea Butter in Soap Formulation. I personally use shea butter in many of my recipes at 5-15%. I prefer raw shea butter in soap. I want all of the natural goodness that shea butter provides. You can get refined shea butter. I use refined shea butter in lotion. It really is a matter of preference. Substitutions for Shea Butter in Soap This soap recipe uses both cocoa butter and shea butter, which constitute roughly a quarter of all the ingredients by weight. It will leave your skin feeling nourished and silky smooth. And it's fairly quick and easy to make, though the soap bars do take at least a few weeks to cure. Isn't easily absorbed by the skin so a soap formula requires the use of an unsaturated fat like olive oil. You can use from 5 - 15% cocoa butter in a soap recipe but try not to use more or the bar may be too hard and brittle. This oil is known to cause irritation in some individuals. This butter has a natural chocolate scent that works well on its own or paired with your favorite fragrance oil. If you want a lighter scent and color that won't clash with your recipes, try deodorized cocoa butter. You can use it up to 15% in cold process soap to add firmness and moisture. It doesn't contribute to lather. It's best to temper cocoa butter.
